Maximinus I (also known as Maximinus Thrax), a Roman emperor from 235 to 238 AD, was a "barracks emperor" of humble Thracian origin who rose to power after his troops assassinated Severus Alexander. His reign was characterized by military campaigns and a harsh, oppressive regime that led to widespread discontent and the senatorial revolt of the "Year of the Six Emperors" in 238. Maximinus and his son were eventually killed by their own soldiers while besieging Aquileia.
