The 1897 South Africa 2½ Shilling silver coin was issued by the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek (ZAR), or South African Republic. It features a portrait of President Paul Kruger and is highly sought after by collectors, particularly in higher grades.

The 1897 2½ Shilling coin was minted during a period of rising tensions between the ZAR, led by Paul Kruger, and the British Empire. This coin was produced shortly before the outbreak of the Second Boer War (1899–1902). After the war, the ZAR was absorbed into the British Transvaal Colony.
